Freshness and safety begin long before the first bite.
You may have seen recent headlines about foodborne illnesses linked to foods like romaine lettuce or pre-sliced melon. At Wild for Salmon, we take pride in ensuring that our wild-caught fish never joins that list. Each fillet we harvest from Alaska’s pristine waters is flash-frozen and vacuum-sealed within hours of catch locking in flavor, nutrition, and quality.
But here’s a small, important truth of good seafood stewardship: how you thaw your fish matters.
Why Our Packaging Is So Important
Our individually vacuum-sealed portions keep your seafood at peak freshness. The air is removed to protect the fish from oxidation and freezer burn the enemies of flavor and texture. This process also lets you see exactly what you’re buying: clean, vibrant, wild fish.
However, because vacuum packaging removes oxygen, it also creates an environment where certain bacteria like Clostridium botulinum could grow if the fish is thawed improperly at warm temperatures. This is the bacterium that can cause botulism, a rare but serious foodborne illness.
The good news? Prevention is effortless. All it takes is a simple snip.
Why “Snip for Safety” Works
Clostridium botulinum is an anaerobic bacterium, meaning it grows only where there’s little or no oxygen. By snipping open the corner of the vacuum package or removing the fish entirely before thawing, you re-introduce oxygen and eliminate the environment this bacterium needs to grow.
So while our packaging locks in freshness, your quick snip ensures absolute safety.
How to Safely Thaw Wild for Salmon Seafood
If you’re keeping it in the original vacuum pack:
-
Snip a small corner or make a tiny slit to let air in.
-
Place on a plate or in a bowl.
-
Thaw slowly in the refrigerator overnight.
-
Prepare, cook, and enjoy!
If you prefer to remove it from the packaging:
-
Take the seafood out of the vacuum pack.
-
Place on a plate or bowl and cover with plastic wrap.
-
Thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
-
Cook to your liking grilled, roasted, or pan-seared.
Avoid thawing at room temperature, in hot water, or on the counter. Cold and slow keeps your seafood safe and tasting like it just came off the boat.
